Description

John Coltrane 1962 Copenhagen, Denmark Concert Poster. An original large paper concert poster for jazz great John Coltrane appearing in Copenhagen, Denmark on Thursday night, November 22, 1962. Legendary jazz promoter Norman Granz presented the proceedings, calling it simply "A Modern Jazz Concert." In 1962, "modern jazz" was all the rage. Notice that "62" has been stamped in the lower right corner, which we're assuming was not part of the original printing or posting.

The musicians appearing in Coltrane's quartet are also listed on the poster, a nice plus: Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano and Jimmy Garrison on bass. Those musicians also played on Trane's latest LP offering, Coltrane, which had been released in July on Impulse! Records.

A very rare poster by a towering giant in the field of jazz, and certainly the first one Heritage has ever had the pleasure to offer. Measures 23" x 33 1/4" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Poster is full, robust, handles easily and has only a slight quarter-inch tear on the top edge above "R" in "Falkoner." What's unusual about this poster is that whatever was used to adhere it to a surface, like a wall or fence, was very light and the poster came off beautifully. So on the back you have the remnants of wheatpaste or whatever it was, which is rough to the touch but not the least bit sticky. Frankly it gives the poster an authentic, used-to-sell-tickets feeling to it, instead of just a straight-mint white piece of paper. Maybe not for all, but we find it charming and more desirable than a straight mint poster.
