Jimmy Smith ("Jazz Organist") 1971 Berkeley, CA Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising jazz keyboardist Jimmy Smith performing at New Ruthie's Inn in Berkeley, CA for three nights in the middle of the week... June 8, 9 & 10, 1971.

Jimmy was known for playing familiar songs on the organ - instrumental cover versions, if you will - as two of the song titles on this poster attest: Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Workin'" and Otis Redding's "Respect." The approach paid off; Smith charted no fewer than 22 of his albums on Billboard magazine's Top LP's chart throughout the 1960's, all on Blue Note or Verve Records.

This poster, printed by Oakland's Tilghman ("till-man") Press, features a nice split-fountain effect against a bright yellow backdrop. The full red at the top morphs into black ink in the middle, working nicely for Smith's picture, and then transitions into maroon or burgundy at the bottom for the dates.

Measures 17" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. Dinged upper right corner left two creases, each about 1 ½" in length. Other three corners barely touched. A bit of surface scratching to "NN" in "Inn" in the upper right. Other than that, just staple holes... upwards of 20 sets of staple holes, most of them in the yellow but mostly benign; a couple in Jimmy's photo but harmlessly to the right of his face; and one dinged the "N" in "New" in upper left. Otherwise the board is pretty robust and feels fairly new and solid. COA from Heritage Auctions.
