Description
Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jethro Tull, Marvin Gaye, Ike & Tina Turner 1969 "Newport 69" Concert Poster. An original full-sized, colorful concert poster for a three-day music festival called "Newport 69 at Devonshire Downs" in the San Fernando Valley portion of Los Angeles, taking place the weekend of June 20-22, 1969. Jimi played on stage both Friday and Sunday, and his likeness dominates the attractive watercolor artwork that adorns this poster. Thirty-one acts are listed, many of them hit-makers or FM-radio favorites of the late Sixties. An estimated 200,000 fans attended the three-day event, easily the largest pop-concert gathering up to that time (Woodstock was still two months away). Measures 24" x 36" and grades to Near Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: "The Downs" was a horse-racing track and multipurpose event facility in Northridge, CA, owned by the adjacent San Fernando Valley State College.
Besides the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the acts appearing on this poster consist of Jethro Tull, Marvin Gaye, Ike & Tina Turner, The Byrds, Joe Cocker, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Arthur Lee and Love, Booker T. & the MG's, Eric Burdon, the Chambers Bros., the Grass Roots, the Rascals, Spirit, Poco, Johnny Winter, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, Albert Collins, Albert King, Brenton Wood, Buffy St. Marie, the Edwin Hawkins Singers, the Friends of Distinction, Lee Michaels, Taj Mahal, Charity, the Flock, Mother Earth, Southwind and Sweetwater.
This poster has not been graded and slabbed by CGC because it's not pictured in the Art of Rock book or Eric King guide, so it's not part of a series they currently certify. That, plus it's too large for CGC's holders anyway.
