Description
CAPTIVATING LOCAL ARTWORK ADORNS THIS JIMI POSTER
Jimi Hendrix Experience 1970 Madison, WI Concert Poster. An
original concert-advertising poster from the spring of 1970 for the
Jimi Hendrix Experience playing at the Dane County Memorial
Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday evening, May 2, 1970. Oz
was the opening act, and the crowd was about 5,000. This was Jimi's
1970 trio which consisted of Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell
on drums, calling themselves Cry of Love. But concert promoters
continued to call them the "Experience" until the very end, surely
feeling it would sell more tickets.Features quite a compelling drawing of Jimi as the centerpiece artwork, with the opening act worked into his scarf. Interesting how the show was co-promoted by a New York firm, and the sound was done by McCune from San Francisco. It's original art like this, usually created locally and used only once, that makes collecting Hendrix from his brief career so interesting and compelling. This poster's provenance is great, too: it originated with the show's promoter. Measures 18" x 24" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: In the book Eyewitness, The Illustrated Jimi Hendrix Concerts 1969-1970, Charlene Harris writes: "Jimi changed his guitar six times and even played it with his teeth. He was very personable and talked to the audience about the meaning of his songs. He did everything from playing the guitar between his legs to playing it behind his head. "A young man in the audience yelled out to Jimi, 'What can we give you?' - his reply was, "a joint.'"
Condition details: Poster is basically in very clean, unused shape, but does have a crease which starts on the left edge and goes into the American Indian gear at the bottom of Jimi's scarf. It's about 10 inches long, but vanishes after five inches when it hits the artwork; in fact, you can barely see it on the peach anyway (down from "Madison, Wisconsin"). That's about it; there does appear to be the faintest of printer's flaws at the top edge all the way over to the left, and again above the bottom edge down below "By:" through "New York." We believe these are just random, super light printer's ink flaws.
