WITH CORRECT DATE, NOT THE ERROR VERSION

Jimi Hendrix Experience 1968 Sun Devils Gym / Tempe, Arizona Concert Poster. A simply amazing Jimi Hendrix Experience concert poster from the winter of 1967-68 at Arizona State University where Jimi was being presented by... a fraternity! How often have you seen that before?

The date was Monday, February 5, 1968, the price was only three bucks, the location was a college gym, the only Jimi album people knew yet was Are You Experienced?, and isn't this reversed-out negative image of Jimi just the coolest? With the full band name in his hair, ending with an exclamation point. How could you blame them!

There's a great twist to this poster, too. So yes, the concert took place on February 5, 1968. But the graphic artist originally put, horror of horrors, March 5 in the upper left corner, a full month off, and they printed it. We don't know if it got distributed, but they weren't entirely destroyed; in fact, the handbill of this show that we sold last July had the wrong date.

That flyer, btw, went for $4,500. That was a first, and this is the very first time Heritage has the pleasure of offering up the full poster - with the correct date the show happened on.

Measures 11" x 15 ¾" and in Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Quiz: What was the Jimi Hendrix poster that immediately preceded this one? Answer in a minute.

So many things to say about this poster. It also exists on yellow paper, as did the handbill that we sold last summer. This white specimen belonged to a local photographer who attended the show and had access to the musicians back in those innocent days, and in fact took some great photos of Jimi on this very night. He held onto the poster for almost half a century before finally selling it.

Condition details: Viewed straight on, the black in the image area looks perfect. Tilted at an angle to the light, there's either a barely visible surface scuff or printer's flaw mostly over the "Mach" of "Soft Machine," with one line going down through "G" of "Gym," "8," "A" of "Fraternity" and the Melody Shop info. Also a bit over the "Live" on the left side, and in the black areas to the left & right of "Presented by Sigma Chi Fraternity."

On the verso, the poster has a tape lift in the upper left corner area; some black ink residue from another copy of the poster printed, bottom center; and an average amount of handling, especially in the lower right corner area with a little tad of grime. All four corners show very small, benign creasing, hardly a factor but mentioned just for full disclosure.

And oh, the previous Jimi poster to this was no less than Rick Griffin's flying eyeball. Not bad company to be rubbing elbows with! It's too bad this poster artist was uncredited; it was probably done by students. Which would help account for the whole wrong-date snafu, right?
