Description
JIMI BUSTED FOR DRUGS BUT STILL, THE SHOW MUST GO ON
Jimi Hendrix 1969 Toronto, Canada CHUM-FM Drug-Bust Concert
Poster. An original, printed-before-the-show spring 1969 paper
concert poster for the Jimi Hendrix Experience appearing at
Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens for one show on Saturday night, May 3,
1969. Printed entirely in purple, blue & green - no black ink was
used - this poster was produced by CHUM-FM, Toronto's leading FM
rock station at the time. So it most likely doubled as a promo for
the station as well as the concert, and it's believed that CHUM
gave them away to listeners, advertisers and such. At this point in
time, Jimi was considered the highest-paid entertainer in the
world, with the Beatles, Stones and Elvis all off the concert
trail. The big backstory to this poster was that Jimi was arrested on this very day when he arrived at Toronto's airport, perhaps on trumped-up drug charges (he was later acquitted by a jury). So the guitarist spent all day at the courthouse instead of relaxing and sound-checking.
The last time Heritage sold this poster, it went for $9,375 in November 2022. Measures 17" x 25" and grades to lovely Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: This poster has not been graded and slabbed by CGC because it's not pictured in the Art of Rock book or Eric King guide, so it's not part of a series they currently certify.
A one-hit band that Jimi produced, Cat Mother & the All-Night Newsboys, were one of the opening acts, abbreviated to just "Cat Mother" in the credits below. Tickets were scaled $2.50 up through $5.50 (remember, Canadian).
Still firmly in the Billboard magazine best-selling album chart at this time were Jimi's Are You Experienced? from 1967 and Electric Ladyland from '68. His in-between album, Axis: Bold as Love, had dropped off the chart by now.
