Jerry Butler 1960 "Summer Blues Festival" Boxing-Style Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising a "Summer Blues Festival" tour in 1960 starring Jerry Butler and Wade Flemons, with opening acts Lattimore Brown and Jimmy Beck and his Orchestra. This poster was used to sell tickets for the stop at the Meadow Acres Ballroom in Topeka, Kansas on Sunday, September 4, 1960.

Jerry Butler, in the upper left picture, was a monster talent with a long & distinguished R&B singing career, with charting singles from the 1950's to the 1980's. What's terrific about the timing of this poster is that it coincides with the biggest hit of his career... "He Will Break Your Heart." That single was released in August, this concert happened in September, the record entered Billboard magazine's R&B singles chart in October, and it rose to #1 where it stayed for seven consecutive weeks.

Butler had been at the top of the charts once before, two years prior, when he sang "For Your Precious Love" (plugged on the poster) with the Impressions. Jerry would eventually chart 59 R&B singles in Billboard, many of them duets with the likes of Betty Everett, Gene Chandler, Thelma Houston and Patti Austin.

Second-billed Wade Flemons had a Top 10 R&B hit this spring with "Easy Lovin'," plus two other Top 20 hits in his career.

The verso of this poster has a real surprise, too... the printing company accidentally ran this blank board through its press wrong-side-up. So rather than throw it away, naturally they just flipped it over and ran it though on the correct, white side of the board. Voila! A really fun, different kind of conversation piece. This is not unheard of, we've seen it at least a couple of other times over the last 25 years, but obviously it's very very unusual.

Measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. Poster has taken on light surface grime and toning over the years, and also some faint traces of very light moisture droplets here & there. There's a noticeable hole in Wade Flemons' photo on the right, and a much smaller one on Jerry Butler's face on the left. We counted 11 more pinholes in the corners and margins. Light brown staining at the poster's very top center around the ampersand. Top two corners creased, which barely show it, and there's a ding in the edge by the lower left corner. The verso has some visible water stains. COA from Heritage Auctions.
