    Description

Jefferson Airplane 1966 Concert Poster - San Jose Civic Auditorium.
A very scarce first printing of a popular Bay Area concert poster from the spring of 1966, which was later completely re-designed and sold by the thousands as a head-shop merchandising poster. This is strictly the pre-concert advertising version that was made in very small numbers (see "More Information" below), and few remain today in any condition.

Its popularity hinges on the delightful artwork of a bloated, jalopy-like airplane right in the middle, complete with a banner promising "an ectodelec trip" - whatever that meant. Then you have the band's name artfully drawn in red & yellow all around it.

Even the poster's concert information is written in fun, stylized cursive that's hard to ignore. "Also featuring The 'E Types' & William Penn and His Pals," it proclaims. The former was a garage band from nearby Salinas, very popular with San Jose teenagers. The latter was a psych band from San Mateo that featured drummer Mickey Hart before the Grateful Dead, and keyboardist/lead vocalist Gregg Rolie, later a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee with Santana and Journey.

As for the Airplane, Signe Anderson was still their female vocalist and more importantly, this was the very last Airplane gig for supremely talented musician Skip Spence, playing drums. Underutilized in the Airplane, Spence went right on to form Moby Grape, a Bay Area institution.

As a reference, this poster falls the weekend before Bill Graham poster BG-10, which the Airplane also headlined. This poster is often misidentified as being from the San Francisco Civic; it was definitely from the San Jose Civic, about an hour to the south. In our last poster auction we sold one of the reproductions; now it's time for the Real McCoy.

The poster is made of card stock and measures 17.25" x 22.25". Grades to Very Good due to four thumbtack holes w/indentations; a very very light amount of the faintest of moisture splattering, not an issue at all; the tiniest nicks of paper loss in the upper right corner; and overall toning, which frankly plays right into the poster's autumn colors. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: It's very easy to distinguish the common merchandising version from this rare advertising version, because the merch poster was completely redrawn, from top to bottom, so the differences are endless. Find a picture of the bootleg online and compare the two side-by-side. The most glaring differences: the merch version has no red & yellow coloring at all; the band's name is all in purple; the airplane in the center is all black & white; and the "ectodelec trip" banner is completely gone - instead they just put the words down at the bottom. There's no comparison. This red & yellow original is SO much better looking, and we're not just saying that to sell you a poster... it's just wildly evident to anybody.
