Description

Janis Joplin 1969 Chicago, IL Cartoon Concert Poster by Jay Lynch. An original and quite unique concert poster advertising Janis Joplin belting it out, and performing at, the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday night, November 23, 1969. Just an incredibly imaginative design by Jayzey (Jay) Lynch, a key figure in the underground comix movement of the day. Since a picture's worth a thousand words, we'll have to let the image do the talking here. Somehow the Art of Rock book missed this one, for which they must receive demerit points; it's an amazingly visual bowl of candy.

Even the back side of this poster is unique... it carries an ad for Ampex Tapes and their "Tune Tripper" portable cassette player. (This poster was also printed without the ad, but we don't know the rarity factor relative to each other.) And it's scarce enough that Heritage has never had the pleasure of offering one before, so we happily are now. Measures 15 3/4" x 20 3/4" and grades to Very Good condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Poster has a slightly crumpled edge to the direct left of "Princess of Wails." There's a tiny pinhole and slight verso tape-lift to the lower right of the man with bloodshot eyes. A couple of other handling creases are present to the glossy paper, but not a factor as they generally get lost in the busy, colorful artwork.
