James Brown / Muddy Waters 1969 Penn State "Black Arts Festival" Handbill. An original paper advertising flyer for a week-long Black Arts Festival in the spring of 1969 on the campus of Penn State University in State College, PA, roughly halfway between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

An impressive roster of talent was lined up for the festival, led by two towering giants in their respective genres, James Brown and Muddy Waters. The distinguished Congressman from Harlem, Adam Clayton Powell, was a speaker as well. "It's Our Thing," states the artwork, featuring a stylized nose and glasses as the logo. According to the Penn State archives, "The purpose of the festival was to educate whites about Black culture and to strengthen the pride and unity of Black students."

Measures a shade above 8 1/2" x 11" and grades to Very Good condition. Significant light brown toning, especially around the four edges, and strongest on the left side where it actually produces a thin brown margin the entire length. Small tear on left margin 1 ½" down from the top. Tiny tip of missing paper in upper right corner. Both upper corners a little bent and creased, and the upper left corner has a 1 ¾" vertical crease as well. There's also a small torn flap right above "BL" in "Black" at the top that's almost invisible. COA from Heritage Auctions.
