James Brown 1967 Richmond, Virginia Concert Poster. Slightly oversized cardboard window card for "the Fabulous James Brown, 18-Piece Band and his Revue" playing at the City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia on Thursday evening, September 7, 1967. Billed as a "Show for the Entire Family," the concert featured ticket prices as low as 99 cents for children under 12.

This was the "Cold Sweat" James Brown, as that single had just been #1 for three weeks on the Billboard R&B charts (and went Top 10 pop as well). And in the previous two years, Brown had produced the pop-crossover smashes "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World."

This poster design for James is usually associated with the year 1968, when it was used pretty much all year long. But sometimes it snuck into use in late 1967, and this summer version is about the earlier used of this purple & black template that we've ever seen. It features James looking rather dapper, fit and safe "for the entire family" in his bow tie. Wonderful lettering used for his name, too.

Made by the legendary Globe Poster in Baltimore, MD, which gets a credit down in the bottom right, this poster measures 14" x 24 1/4" and grades to restored Very Good condition. The board appears to have had professional repair work, especially in the top venue box and the lower right corner area. In the process, the poster was dry-mounted or re-mounted to a stiff cardboard backing, which has some top-to-bottom curl to it, so it doesn't lie flat. Framing would completely negate that, of course. Surface creasing in areas like the "BR" of "Brown" and in the singer's hair have all but disappeared due to the thorough and expert mending job.
