Description
James Brown 1967 Oakland, CA Concert Poster from the "Summer of Progress." An original cardboard window card advertising The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, in concert at the New Oakland Coliseum in the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday, July 9, 1967. "James Brown and Revue" and his "18 Piece Orchestra," the board proclaims in its attractive light purple, black and white motif.JB was having his usual strong summer touring season, and continuing his assault on the charts. His new single released this very week was "Cold Sweat - Part 1," a Top 10 pop hit and #1 R&B hit for James. The Hardest Working Man in Show Business actually had three Top 10 R&B hits this year, the other two being "Bring It Up" and "Let Yourself Go."
Mr. Brown looks quite spiffy in his bow tie on this poster, which was made by the prestigious Globe Poster company out of Baltimore, credited down in the lower right corner.
Poster measures 22 x 28 ½" and grades to Very Good Minus condition for a good number of small issues. There's a hole in the "W" of "New" up at the top, and a big staple hole between the "D" of "Oakland" and "C" of "Coliseum." Surface crease in upper right below "EUM" of "Coliseum." All corners bumped and some creased. On the poster's left edge, there's a one-inch tear to the left of "J," leaving a small piece of material sticking up a little. There's also an edge tear to the left of "B," and some light staining in that area. Over on the right, creases in the white area to the right of "N."
As for James himself, there's a surface tear by his ear and a tape lift on his chin. In the bottom black stripe, there are creases and wrinkles. Light toning all around the poster's edges. And the verso has stains in the upper and lower right corner areas. COA from Heritage Auctions.
