    Description

James Brown 1965 "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" Tuscaloosa, AL Concert Poster. An original concert poster made on card stock for The Hardest-Working Man in Show Business, James Brown, appearing in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Tuesday, October 5, 1965. Also appearing were "Brown's Famous All-Star Revue" - in other words, his touring band.

The career timing of this small but charismatic poster couldn't be better... the show fell right between JB's two 1965 pop-music evergreens, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)." The former had peaked at #8 this summer, and the latter would peak at #3 this winter. But it was released by King Records this month, in October. So... musically, what more could anybody ask for?

The poster does list four songs at bottom center, and we love the way two of them defined his career in the 1950's... "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me." Throw in his hugely influential Top 5 hit from 1962, "Night Train," plus "Papa's," and you almost feel like this poster was designed specifically for collectors to drool over decades later. Love the blue ink, too, instead of standard black. It's the only one we've ever seen, and likely the only one that still exists.

This poster is made of card stock, measures 12 1/4" x 17" and grades to Good condition. Poster has a lot of charisma but is in pretty rough shape. Paper missing from both upper right and lower right corners. Significant two-inch tear at bottom center, extending through the song titles and into the star. It was mended with a single piece of clear cello tape on the verso; a paper pro could probably re-mend it to show the song titles better. Copious tiny holes throughout the poster, of unknown origin; we counted about 40. These include staple holes used in posting; the only damaging set is found in the "A" in "James." Surface creases throughout, including on James' chest and in his hair, but luckily his face is untouched. Strong five-inch crease starting in the "J" of "James" and heading down. Several edge creases on the left side, not tears, and lower left corner is creased with a small hole punched but most paper appears still intact. COA from Heritage Auctions.
