James Brown 1965 Live at the Apollo, Harlem, New York Handbill. An original two-sided concert flyer advertising no less than the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, performing at the same Apollo Theatre which had given him the best-selling album of his career, Live at the Apollo, two years earlier. There was never a genuine, pre-show poster made of James live at this theatre, so a handbill is as good as it gets. And this was for a full week of shows, from May 14-21, 1965, when his very next single would be "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Very strong presence for JB on both sides of the flyer. Measures 8 1/2" x 11" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: The Apollo knew what they had on this occasion... they really played up the presence of The Hardest-Working Man in Showbiz. Look at the column on the left... "Special Events During This Exciting James Brown Week." Those included free records, a dance contest, a teen night with just 65 cents admission, and special midnight shows.

The flip side of the handbill lists the following two weeks, and shows photos of all the stars - Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Horace Silver and the great Jackie Wilson.

Condition details: Handbill was folded in half, so has a horizontal crease right above "Teenagers," through the man's face and right under "The Ovations." (On the filp side, it falls perfectly.) There are also faint remnants of two vertical folds, but they barely show. One passes through the "S" in "Flames" and goes between "Obrey" and "Wilson." The other one... keeps disappearing when we try to find it. We're talking faint stuff here. The verso (w/Miriam and Jackie) must've been the side facing outward when it was folded in half, because it has some light toning and a tiny edge mark in the lower right corner (by the Apollo logo).
