Description

James Brown 1965 Columbia, SC "Out of Sight" Jumbo Concert Poster. A terrifically fun concert poster for Mr. Dynamite, James Brown, appearing outdoors on a school football field over the Fourth of July weekend in 1965 in Columbia, South Carolina. Not only did the Godfather of Soul play that evening, but during the daytime there was an all-day barbeque, a baseball game and dancing. The holiday's here, let's party!

Really nice, bright colors on this window card, and a great photo of James' smiling, charismatic face as well. And are you ready for this? Mr. Brown's brand new single, entering Billboard's singles charts in just a couple of weeks, was "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." And his very next single, out this fall? The biggest pop hit of his career: "I Got You (I Feel Good)." Whew, what a time to see him in concert.

Measures 22" x 28" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Other acts on the bill included, of course, his backing group The Famous Flames; the Flame who discovered JB, Bobby Byrd; personality T.V. Mama; and James Crawford, Baby Lloyd and Al Brisco Clark.

Condition details: The red, white, black & yellow central image area is fairly strong on this, with the exception of a light crease that goes under Mr. Brown's ear and across his chin, which doesn't break color; likewise for three smaller creases that impinge a tad on "Mr. Dynamite"; and some rubbing away of the musicians' names in the two bottom yellow stripes. There's also an unusual pair of black dots in the word "Sight" under James' name, clearly a printer's anomaly.

The edges and corners are where this board's damage lies. Upper left corner missing, and nail pull-aways in the top center and top right, with tape residue remaining in all three areas. Similar tape residue in all three places at the bottom, going over the "U" in "Universal" on the left, into the "N" in "Brown" bottom center, and torn away in the lower right, leaving a tape lift which knocks out the phone number (of Scoop Printing Co.) and half of "N.Y.C." Also, the black ink smeared a bit in the bottom black lettering, "James Brown 18-Piece Orch."
