Description

Jackie Brenston Concert Poster (1951). Rare. Jumbo window card printed on card stock for the "Big 4th Of July Dance, American Legion Hall, 125 1/2 E. 9th St., Chattanooga". The poster features a photograph of Brenston and announces "Jackie Brenston singing 'Rocket 88' featuring Ike Turner King Of The Ivories". Printed by "Southern Printing Co. Atlanta, GA". Measures 22" x 28". In Good condition, the poster has significant restoration to the lower right corner measuring 17" x 12", with some areas replaced and others touched in. There is also restoration to the top right and bottom left corners, with areas of loss replaced. Some general warping and general toning commensurate with age.

This incredible poster documents the very beginnings of Rock n' Roll! Many consider "Rocket 88" to be the first Rock n' Roll recording. It was released in April, 1951, credited to Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats. Although Brenston did write the song (a re-working of "Cadillac Boogie" by Jimmy Liggins), the song was really recorded by Ike Turner and His Kings of Rhythm, with new recruit Brenston on vocals. The song was cut at Sam Phillips' studio in Memphis. The sound was distinctly different, partly due to the skittering piano and Brenston's vocal style. The guitar was quite unique also, though not planned. An amplifier had been accidentally damaged on the way to Memphis. The band's guitarist Willie Kazart had "fixed" the amp by stuffing it with newspaper which created the distortion that can be heard on the recording.

When the single was released Ike Turner was less than pleased to discover that Chess had credited it to Brenston not him. The song went to no.1 on the R&B charts and, the rest, they say, is history.
