Description
Harry James "America's No. 1 Trumpeter" 1945 Salem, NH Concert Poster. An original vintage window card advertising legendary bandleader and trumpeter Harry James and his Orchestra in person at Canobie Lake Park in Salem, NH on Thursday, July 19, 1945.This poster is highlighted by a terrific "shadow effect" on the surface behind Harry, so popular a design that it was actually used for years as a "tour blank," often printed in other colors like blue or red. Still, it's very tough to find in any color.
Great career timing here for "America's No. 1 Trumpeter." Harry was just releasing yet another Top 10 hit at the time of this show, "If I Loved You" from the stage musical Carousel. And that was sandwiched between two #1 hits of his in 1945: "I'm Beginning to See the Light" from January, and "It's Been a Long Long Time" from October. So much great music for couples to dance to!
Measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. Significant damage to the right edge of the poster, from top to bottom, going into the image area by Mr. James' head, with a small loose flap and a larger tight flap, but no danger of detaching yet. Board also has a vertical crease from top to bottom, running through the "K" in "Lake" at the top to the "E" in "Orchestra" at the bottom, but is mostly not visible except on Harry's shadow. There's a 4 ½" crease on lower left corner, small dings, nicks and tears on the edges of the venue box (mostly harmless) and toning throughout. Water stain affecting the bottom and right margins is visible on the verso as well. COA from Heritage Auctions.
