Harry Belafonte 1960 New York Concert Handbill to Benefit Rev. Martin Luther King An original paper flyer advertising a benefit night of music on Friday night, April 22, 1960 featuring "International Star" Harry Belafonte, Wini Brown, The Flamingos, Curly Hamner and Tito Puente & his Big Band.

Few performers and entertainers in American history have been as multi-talented and multi-faceted as Harry Belafonte. And along with all his talents, Belafonte was a leader in the Civil Rights movement of the 1950's and 60's, and a confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

So here we have an amazing-looking handbill from the Rockland Palace Ballroom in Harlem, Manhattan, New York (also see our Thelonious Monk poster this auction) advertising "International Star" Harry Belafonte in a "Benefit Dance & Show of Stars."

And then in small words down at the bottom, the flyer states, "Proceeds to support Rev. Martin Luther King of Montgomery, Ala. - and to assist the Southern students 'Sit Down for Freedom' Campaign."

Musically, Harry Belafonte was on a quite a roll at this exact moment. He was right in between two smash hit albums, Belafonte at Carnegie Hall (1959) and Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall (released in November 1960), both national Top 3 albums. Harry would go on to win just about everything in his career: Three Grammy awards, an Emmy award and a Tony award; the Kennedy Center Honors and National Medal of Arts; and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

This handsome handbill measures 8 1/2 x 11" and is in Near Mint condition with a small spot of soiling in the bottom right corner and on back side, along with a pencil mark on verso. COA from Heritage Auctions.
