Description

Grateful Dead Trip Or Freak Fantasmagoraball Winterland Concert Poster AOR -2.183 Signed By Stanley Mouse (1967). Rare Artwork by Stanley Mouse, Rick Griffin and Alton Kelley, advertising a Halloween, 1967 show at the Winterland with an outstanding line-up including the Grateful Dead and Big Brother And The Holding Company. The orange poster is printed on thin white stock and features a large central image designed by Alton Kelley, of Lon Chaney from the 1925 movie The Phantom Of The Opera, with a smaller version of the same image repeated throughout the background. The title lettering at the top designed by Mouse, incorporates an image of a topless woman. Griffin's trademark lettering is featured at the bottom of the poster showing artist and venue information (note Griffin misspelt Quicksilver as "Quiksilver"!). Stanley Mouse has signed the poster in black ink along the bottom edge of the poster. Measures approximately 14.25" x 26.25". In Very Good condition, with a very small spot of debris approximately .01" in diameter stuck to the surface of the poster to the top left side of the skull of the large image of Chaney. There are several light creases across the surface of the poster, with signs of wear and rubbing to corners and edges.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.185 (illus.).

The Trip Or Freak poster is one of the classic images of the psychedelic era, featuring an amazing line-up, with two of the greatest San Francisco bands of the period; the Dead and Big Brother, just as they were about to achieve stardom. A highly desirable poster!
