Description
Grateful Dead Skeleton and Roses Silk-Screened Print by Stanley Mouse (undated). A silk-screened print measuring 22" x 17", signed and inscribed "Hand printed by Stanley Mouse" (meaning Mouse pulled the print himself, adding colored inks to the screen to produce the graduated color effect). This skull-and-roses image was originally from a 1913 illustration by Edmund J. Sullivan in an edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. San Francisco psychedelic poster artists Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley adapted the image and incorporated it into a colorful poster in 1966 to advertise the Grateful Dead and Oxford Circle gig at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. This image is instantly recognizable as a classic Grateful Dead poster and may very well be the most well-known San Francisco psychedelic poster (the last one we offered sold for more than $4,000). It was this image which firmly established the skeleton and roses as an icon for this band and set the standard for all future Grateful Dead related works of art. This particular print of the famous image is in Near Mint condition and has been matted and framed to an overall size of 24.25" x 31.25". Third party shipping required.‡ The owner placed a late bid on this unreserved lot and repurchased it, subject to applicable commission.
