Description

Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna 1970 S.F. Winterland Concert Poster. An original San Francisco concert poster advertising the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna performing at the Winterland Ballroom on the unusual pairing of Sunday and Monday, October 4 & 5, 1970. Also on the bill but not on the poster was Quicksilver Messenger Service. It's believed they took the place of the New Riders of the Purple Sage, who did not perform.

This poster has a lot of depth to it. Janis Joplin died on the Sunday, surely impacting the acts heavily and likely leading to some tributes from the stage. The show was simulcast on KQED-TV and KSAN-FM radio, providing state-of-the-art quadraphonic stereo. In fact, the two media outlets combined to provide four distinct channels of sound, a historic first.

And these two shows were the last time the Dead shared a stage with their old friends and friendly rivals Quicksilver, marking the end of an era of sorts.

But what a special time for the acts musically... the latest albums from each act were Workingman's Dead, Volunteers, Just for Love (Quicksilver) and the self-titled Hot Tuna, the latter becoming the highest-charting album ever for the Airplane spin-off duo.

Designed by the popular David Singer, this poster was printed only once, and not in large quantities. Measures 14" x 21" and grades to Near Mint condition. From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
