Grateful Dead / Janis Joplin / The Band 1970 Festival Express Concert Handbill.
A paper flyer advertising and selling tickets for one stop on the well-documented Transcontinental Pop Festival rock & roll train tour of Canada in the summer of 1970. The trek quickly became known by the less cumbersome name of The Festival Express Tour, and in 2003 a documentary film was released to theaters giving everyone a good look at the highly unusual caravan of rock legends and assorted other musicians. The whole affair lasted a total of only 10 days.

Five cities were originally planned but two of them were canceled, so the tour ended up playing only three events. This catchy purple, orange & white handbill was used for all involved dates, with each city getting their own booking form down at the bottom. With Montreal and Vancouver canceled, the tour kicked off in Toronto the last weekend in June; played in Winnipeg on Wednesday, July 1 (Canada Day, so a holiday); and finished the first weekend in July in Calgary. All three cities are mentioned at the bottom of the artwork, but this flyer sold tickets for only the final stop.

It's an impressive line-up with The Band touring off their first two highly acclaimed albums, Music From Big Pink and The Band; the Grateful Dead promoting their brand new album, the masterpiece Workingman's Dead; and Janis Joplin tearing it up with her Kozmic Blues Band, but who would sadly pass away exactly three months after this weekend in Calgary.

Other musicians advertised on this handbill were Delaney & Bonnie, Mountain, Buddy Guy, Eric Anderson, Tom Rush, folk duo Ian & Sylvia with their new country-rock outfit Great Speckled Bird, one-hit American rock band Smith, and Canadian acts Mashmakan, James & the Good Bros. and (Robert) Charlebois.

Measures 8" x 11". In Very Good Minus condition with fold marks, toning throughout and pinholes in each corner. COA from Heritage Auctions.
