Grateful Dead "Aoxomoxoa" Avalon Ballroom Concert Poster (1969). This incredible "mirrored image" first-printing poster, designed by Rick Griffin for a set of January, 1969 shows at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom, is a real visual trip. People have spent many hours studying this poster, trying to make sense of all the visual elements Griffin incorporated into the design, like the sun doubling as a female egg with sperm, the plants with unborn fetuses, the roots of the trees. Even the stylized "Grateful Dead" lettering has been closely scrutinized -- some have noted that the top portion of the lettering actually spells out "We Ate the Acid," but who can say if that was the artist's intention. At any rate, this is a magnificent poster, and one the band loved so much that it was adapted for use as Grateful Dead's third album cover design. The poster measures approximately 22" x 26.25", and is in Very Good condition with slight edge wear and corner creases.
