A TOWERING GIANT OF PSYCHEDELIC CONCERT POSTERS

Grateful Dead 1969 Hawaiian Aoxomoxoa Concert Poster by Rick Griffin (AOR-3.116). An original, first-print Honolulu, Hawaii concert poster for the Grateful Dead and It's a Beautiful Day designed by the most popular of all psychedelic poster artists, Rick Griffin. These shows were at the HIC - Honolulu International Center - for a full weekend from Friday to Sunday, July 25 to 27, 1969. Unfortunately, the shows were canceled, but that made the poster an instant top-level collector's item when most of them were thrown away instead of getting posted. It's such a masterwork that the Art of Rock book gave this poster its own full page, and it's so rare that this is the first one Heritage has ever been able to offer.

This is an undeniable classic in the history of psychedelic concert-poster collecting, and as scarce as they come. Simply put, most serious collectors still need this one in their collection. If only the printer, or Griff himself, had thought to put the whole first printing aside and just throw them in storage, we wouldn't have this problem. But Rick lifted just a few off the top of the stack, as legend has it, and the rest were destroyed. We're sure it's a simple case of nobody wanted to pay the printer's bill. Oy vey.

The sister poster to this auction's 'regular' Aoxomoxoa poster, this Griffin artwork playfully injects the Hawaiian ethos into its graphics. Tiki statues, surfing eyeballs and cresting waves, anyone? How about that "Theater of Madness" banner? This poster has more fun in its little finger than most other psych posters have in their whole body. And there's sure a lot of real estate to play with... at almost two & a half feet tall, there was plenty of room for Mr. Griffin to stretch out his ideas.

Poster has been restored to Very Good condition after being glued down to a backing board for decades for purposes of framing. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Condition details: Poster was meticulously and painstakingly removed from a backing board to which it was firmly glued down for decades around all four edges. The best poster-restoration expert in the United States did this work, and the result is impressive. It's all still the original paper, with repair work done in the black area bordering all four sides. Some creases in the paper have disappeared into that black repair work. The great news is, the color image area itself remains largely untouched, having not been glued on the other side (only the edges were). It does have slight fading due to hanging on a wall all those years, but as you can see from our picture, the piece still has all of its integrity and charisma intact, half a century later. Truly a poster rarity for the ages.
