Description

WE'LL BE TRANSPARENT: THIS IS A KILLER DEAD POSTER

Grateful Dead 1967 Translucent Head-Shop Poster by Bob Fried Graded 9.8 (AOR-2.190). An original only-printing Grateful Dead two-sided window poster to be sold, and promote the band in general, during the key year of 1967. Created by Bob Fried and published by Berkeley Bonaparte, this piece of dizzying visual eye candy has been graded an awesome 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

As you can see from our pictures, the colorful poster is completely transparent, so everything on the back can be seen but is reversed, including the Dead's name. This poster must have been wickedly expensive to produce, and production was reportedly limited to just 500 copies. Many of them have been lost over the years due to both fading from hanging in the light, or the plastic cracking and peeling unless handled with kid gloves (which hippies in the 60's weren't prone to do). So if any poster can benefit from being graded in the 9's and then encapsulated against gathering any further wear & tear, this would certainly be it. Heritage has sold this gem only twice before, but never a monster 9.8 like this. Measures 15 3/4" x 21 1/2". From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.187 (illus.).
