Description
ANOTHER 1966 TOTAL ONE-OFF CHARMER
Grateful Dead 1966 Suisun City, CA Pioneer Ballroom Concert
Poster (AOR-2.184). First-printing concert poster for the
Grateful Dead and the 13 Experience playing at the Pioneer Ballroom
in Suisun City, CA, about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco, on
Friday and Saturday nights, September 23 & 24, 1966. No poster
artist is credited on this fun, charismatic piece, printed in
magenta and black on white paper.Dead collectors love homespun concert posters like this, especially from small towns in the band's first full year of 1966. They often have odd little quirks uniquely their own, and this poster is no exception. For example, instead of the usual "from San Francisco" that many posters stated, this one says "from S.F. Morgue." Wow! Measures 14 1/8" x 20" and grades to Very Good condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.186 (illus.).
More Information: Funny how there's Peanuts character Snoopy saying "Come See Suzy Creamcheese." Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention had released their debut album Freak Out with the Suzy Creamcheese character just three months prior, so that was surely the source of that. This poster has other fun wording like "admission only $1.99 cheap" and "Psychedelic Light Show by Diogenes Lantern Works." A unique piece!
Condition details: Poster has a small gouge on the lower right edge; it's hard to tell if any paper's missing, it might just be scrunched in. The corner tip in that location got lightly dinged as well. There's a tiny blemish-dot inside the last "D" of "Dead." General toning throughout, becoming a little stronger at the poster's top and bottom.
