Description
EARLY FD POSTER TWO WEEKS BEFORE "A TRIBAL STOMP"
FD-VII Charlatans Early 1966 "Rock and Roll Ball" Seminal
Concert Poster. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for
the Amazing Charlatans and the Electric Train playing at California
Hall on Friday night, February 4, 1966. Known as FD-VII in Eric
King's poster guide, this early gem was designed by Michael
Ferguson and George Hunter of the Charlatans and is nicknamed
"Ball," an abbreviation of "Rock and Roll Ball" found across the
top of the poster. This was an early precursor to the regular Family Dog series of posters which would start two weeks later at the Fillmore with FD-1's "A Tribal Stomp." Notice that Hunter used his original artwork from "The Seed" concert poster from Virginia City, Nevada to depict his band. Also notice the font used for "The Family Dog" in the lower right, and how odd it seems. This was just before Wes Wilson and Chet Helms designed the permanent Family Dog logo.
Printed on cardstock, this poster measures 15" x 20" and grades to Very Good condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: King, Eric, The Collector's Guide to Psychedelic Rock Concert Posters, Postcards and Handbills 1965-1973, Vol. 12, Berkeley, CA, 2022, p.224 (illus.).
More Information: Poster has surface blemishes and markings in all four margins. Most of it is out of the artwork, but there's a small stain in the lines directly to the left of the train. The upper left corner tippy-tip is threatening to fall off. There are one or two pinholes in each corner, although the lower right one is a long way from the corner... it's almost under "Cola." The verso has lots of tape residue stains, and about eight words written lightly in pencil.
