Description
FD-93 Janis Joplin/Big Brother & Holding Company 1967 Avalon Concert Poster Graded 10 Gem Mint. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company and Mt. Rushmore playing at the Avalon Ballroom on Thursday thru Saturday nights, November 23-25, 1967. Known as FD-93 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by Joe Gomez and is cleverly nicknamed "Optical Occlusion."Notice the highly unusual placement of the Family Dog logo... right smack dab in the middle above the woman's head, but in a very tiny rendition, surely the smallest of any Family Dog poster ever. This poster's been graded to an unsurpassable 10 Gem Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). Measures 14" x 20". COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Big Brother had a nice moment in the sun in June by wowing people at the Monterey Pop Festival, and in August, Mainstream Records released their debut album, Big Brother and the Holding Company, featuring "Down on Me." Things stayed about the same for the group until the career-defining release of Cheap Thrills in the summer of 1968.
Mount Rushmore was a San Francisco band of the late 60's that played typical blues-rock with psychedelic elements. The five-piece had formed in a Victorian house in the Haight-Ashbury district in early 1967, and did a lot of gigging in the Summer of Love as support for the biggest bands. In 1968, they released a single, a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Stone Free" on Dot Records, but the group never gained a foothold commercially and eventually splintered.
