    Description

FD-6 Big Brother & Holding Company 1966 "Sin Dance" Poster Signed by Wes Wilson. A first-printing San Francisco concert poster for Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Grass Roots and the Sons of Adam at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, 1966. Known as FD-6 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by the legendary Wes Wilson, who has signed it in white pen in the lower right. This was before Janis Joplin joined Big Brother, one of the reasons they're bottom-billed... although they still had Sam Andrew and James Gurley. Measures 14" x 20" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. From the Houston Freeburg Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: The fact that this poster's shows were canceled seems to phase nobody. "It's possible that no psychedelic poster has a greater mystique attached to it than 'Sin Dance,'" states Eric King in his definitive psychedelic poster guide, now in its 10th printing and used by everyone. "That [the concerts were] canceled not only didn't detract from its mystique, it added to it. This may be the quintessential psychedelic poster. It has all the elements which drove the establishment crazy: sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll and vibrating colors.

"This is one of the main reasons why, for a generation, the American art establishment refused to have anything to do with this art form. They considered it the sex-obsessed ravings of drug-addicted, filthy hippies. Now [in hindsight], no matter how naïve the counterculture... might have been about the consequences of immersing oneself in sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, these works are the most vibrantly alive and powerful graphic art of the 20th century."

Condition details: Poster is in great shape other than a slight crumpling to the lower right corner, vertically oriented and rising about two inches up the right edge. Does not reach the green and red. There's also a very light, narrow toning strip on the left margin's edge which starts at the bottom and then gets thinner as it goes up, disappearing halfway up the poster.
