Description

FD-42 Quicksilver Messenger Service, Steve Miller 1967 Avalon Ballroom Poster Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Miller Blues Band and the Other Half playing at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, January 6 & 7, 1967. Known as FD-42 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by Victor Moscoso and has a couple of nicknames, "Dancing Lady" and "Chicken Lady." It's been graded a jump-for-joy 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

Both Quicksilver and Steve Miller were stalwarts of the San Francisco dancehall scene, so it's a treat to have them together on this poster with fun and carefree artwork by Moscoso. This is early enough that all five original members of QMS were still intact, with guitarist/vocalist/harmonica player Jim Murray departing later this year before they recorded their first album. Like QMS, Steve Miller also signed to Capitol Records later this year.

The Other Half were a San Francisco psychedelic garage-rock band, strongly influenced by the Yardbirds and Rolling Stones. Founding guitarist Randy Holden was reportedly even offered the Yardbirds guitar slot when Jeff Beck left the group, but opted for his own band instead. Still, he left the Other Half after their 1968 debut album, and eventually joined Blue Cheer. TOH is best remembered in music-historian circles for their 1966 single "Mr. Pharmacist," which later found a home on one of the famous Nuggets compilations decades later.

Measures a shade over 13" x 19" and grades to 9.8. COA from Heritage Auctions.
