ONE OF THE EARLY, SUPER-TOUGH FAMILY DOG PIECES
FD-4 Love, Sons of Adam 1966 "Dirty Old Man" Fillmore Auditorium
Concert Poster Signed by Wes Wilson. A first-printing San
Francisco concert poster for Love with Arthur Lee, the Sons of Adam
and the Charlatans playing at the Fillmore Auditorium on Friday and
Saturday nights, April 8 & 9, 1966. Known as FD-4 in the Family Dog
numbered series, this poster - nicknamed "Dirty Old Man" - was
created by the late, great poster artist Wes Wilson, who signed it
down in the lower right corner. The central image of a wild man dancing with a cute young thing is tame by today's standards, but at the time it helped signal to Bay Area denizens that a whole new scene was being born. It was crazy, it was daring, it was weird and it was fun. And it was a poke in the eye to the Establishment.
This poster innocently refers to Los Angeles-based Love, led by Arthur Lee, as "The Love," not unlike The Pink Floyd and The Cream getting that extra word added back in this era. Measures 14 1/8" x 20" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: This was the very month that Love first hit Billboard's singles charts with their first charting record, "My Little Red Book," one of three 45s the group issued that got lots of airplay in their native Los Angeles and throughout California, but never gained traction nationally. Their album Forever Changes, however, is often viewed as a masterpiece of the era.
Condition details: Pinholes seem to be the main culprit here... there are seven in the upper left corner, five in the URC, three in the LLC and three in the LRC. In the latter case, Wes even signed over one of them. There's also a very benign surface crease in the top of the "O" in "Love." In the "E" in "Love," there a small black dot of a different shade... it's quite possible that was put there to fill in a pencil-tip of missing color. But that's pure conjecture and only mentioned for (ridiculously) full disclosure. Despite all the pinholes, this poster is very robust and healthy, and doesn't show its age.
