Description
FD-27 Howlin' Wolf, Janis Joplin w/Big Brother 1966 Avalon Ballroom Concert Poster Graded 9.2. First-and-only printing San Francisco concert poster for blues legend Howlin' Wolf plus Janis Joplin with Big Brother & the Holding Company scheduled to play the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, September 23 & 24, 1966. Known as FD-27 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley. Despite its killer imagery, the poster was printed only once, before the planned weekend, so there's no second printing you can settle for. Nicknamed "Howlin' Wolf," this poster's been graded a mean 9.2 Near Mint Minus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). Measures 14 1/4" x 20". From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: The Eric King guide to psychedelic concert posters states that there were two first printings of this poster, both done in advance of the shows to sell tickets, with ever-so-slightly differing dimensions. This FD-27-OP-2 has a lot of red mixed into the orange coloring.
This is a supremely popular poster for its great design, despite the fact the shows were canceled. One can only imagine being near the front of the stage and witnessing both Howlin' Wolf and Janis Joplin in concert, two forces of nature that were dominant in their genres. Still, we have the poster, so the next best thing.
