FD-23 Captain Beefheart & Magic Band 1966 Avalon Ballroom Concert Poster Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band and the Charlatans playing at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, August 26 & 27, 1966. Known as FD-23 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster is nicknamed either "Captain Beefheart" or sometimes "three fat men singing." Designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, the poster measures 14 1/4" x 20" and was graded to a sing-hallelujah 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). More Information: A high-school friend of Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart is best known for his quirky albums like Safe as Milk and Trout Mask Replica. But in this year, 1966, he signed to Herb Alpert's A&M Records and released two singles. One was a cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" which did pretty well in Los Angeles, but didn't make a ripple nationally, so the label dropped him like a bad habit.
