    Description

FD-11 "Stone Facade" 1966 Big Brother & Holding Company Avalon Concert Poster. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for The Grass Roots, Big Brother & The Holding Company (without Janis Joplin yet) and Buddha from Muir Beach playing at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, June 3 & 4, 1966. Known as FD-11 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was still from the spring of '66 when any first-printing Family Dog poster is very tough to find. Measures 13 1/2" x slightly under 20" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: It's interesting to note that the exact photo which artist Victor Moscoso based this poster around, of a gargoyle from Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, is easily found on the internet.

This was the exact month that the Grass Roots' first semi-hit single, "Where Were You When I Needed You," entered Billboard magazine's Hot 100 singles chart. But they wouldn't achieve a real hit for about another year.

Condition details: Four pinholes scattered in the two upper corner areas (but all in the white); three in each of the bottom two corners, tight into the corner (not scattered like above). Poster has a long vertical crease that starts under the "T" in "Roots" at the top, and goes down the length of the poster, between the "O's" in "Ballroom," through the "R" in "Francisco" and through the "A" in "Oakland" in the ticket information. No black color is broken along the way.

The lower left corner area has three creases. The outer one is about 5" and passes through the lower left corner of the artwork, plus five words in the ticket info. The second one is more of an edge crease to the upper left of "Don't." And the smallest, inner one is about an inch. There's also a small triangle-shaped printer's mark on the edge to the left of "1320"; that is not a notch or anything. Poster also has the expected overall toning to the paper. Verso has a few scattered, small, circular light brown stains.
