Description

Elton John 1972 Hamburg, Germany Early Concert Poster. An original, vintage, large paper concert poster for Elton John playing in Hamburg, Germany on Thursday, March 16, 1972.

The unusual graphics depict Sir Elton tearing it up onstage, all action shots that are placed in his hair in his large profile. It's a very unconventional piece, and one that garners a lot of attention. The poster's artwork is comprised of the three autumn colors of brown, orange and yellow, very effectively.

Features a very unusual venue box as well, slanted at an angle like that. First impressions might be that something was printed off-kilter, but no, this is the way it was designed, and we've seen this poster from one other city over the years, and it, too, had tilted venue and ticket information down below.

This great piece comes from our consignor in Germany, who also consigned the Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and Who posters in this auction, so it's been in Germany for all of its four dozen years up until now. The very first time Heritage has ever offered this poster. Measures 23 1/2" x 33" and grades to beautiful Near Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Under Elton's name at the top, it says "Your Song." The rocketman may have gotten a fast start in the States, but in Europe, and especially his native England, he had charted only one single by March of '72, "Your Song." In contrast, he had charted five 45's in America, the current one being "Tiny Dancer."

Fortuitously, we were able to find a photo on the Internet of Elton playing at this very show... March 16, 1972 in Hamburg. We've added the picture to this listing, but it's just here for fun reference; it's not included in the sale, and is just a digital jpeg that anyone can find on-line.

Condition details: Mint by anyone else's standards, this is a beauty with only a couple of hidden surface creases near the poster's center, completely buried in the colors and artwork, most notably in Elton's face near his nose on the far left, but totally benign. A real gem.
