Duke Ellington 1964 Berlin, Germany Concert Poster by Gunther Kieser. An original large paper concert poster for the master, Duke Ellington, and his Orchestra playing at the Sportpalast in Berlin, Germany on Sunday evening, March 15, 1964. Graphic art from German designer Gunther Kieser. Measures 33" x 23 3/8" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Once again, this was a Gunther Kieser creation, at age 34 still with his design partner Hans Michel. They would go their separate ways the following year. But in the meantime, they're both credited on this very cool design with Duke's hat serving as the stage for "The Duke!" in giant letters. A very clever and unusual layout.

According to the Danish web site, this was the European tour where saxophonist Paul Gonsalves fell ill just prior to the tour's opening concert, and Tubby Hayes was asked to sit in on very short notice.

Condition details: Poster was factory-folded down in eighths for mailing. Thus all folds are present, but of the three vertical folds, only the right-hand one break color a little bit, breaking the black in the "A" in "Sportpalast" and some more of the black background. Likewise with the lone horizontal crease, breaking a little black along the way. These do not harm the integrity of the poster at all. There are also a couple of attendant seam splits on the edges, most notably the upper left and center right. Also light toning throughout.
