Duke Ellington 1943 Jumbo Window Card Concert Poster.
Vintage World War II concert poster for Duke Ellington, one of the most celebrated musical geniuses of 20th century popular music. For the State Theater in Hartford, CT on Wednesday, March 10, 1943.

The "Genius of Jazz" was appearing for one day only, and this huge window card trumpeted his arrival with a really cool artistic rendition of Duke's smiling face. Just a commanding red & black & white poster that we're guessing went unused at the time because of its excellent condition for a poster three-quarters of a century old.

The poster names five members of Duke's famous band, including blues singer Betty Roche, known for her sublime singing of "Take the 'A' Train" with Duke & his ork; well-known saxophonist Johnny Hodges; and Ray Nance, whose trumpet solo on "'A' Train" is among the most admired and imitated in jazz-music history.

The Duke was such a seminal figure in 20th-century popular music that even in 1943, he was already celebrating his 20th anniversary! As it boasts along the bottom of the poster. Simply remarkable.

It's very unlikely another specimen of this or the Cab Calloway poster still exist in any condition, let alone the unused state these two were found in. Measuring 21.75" x 28.5", this is graded Very Good due to overall toning and some light water-stain damage creeping up from the bottom, which must be acknowledged but hardly detracts from the commanding nature of this piece. There are also a number of small nicks and dings around the edges, including a 3/4" tear on the lower left edge, and some corner wear & creases. COA from Heritage Auctions.
