Description

Duane & Gregg Allman / Hourglass 1968 Kaleidoscope, L.A. Uncut Concert Poster (AOR-3.78). An original first printing for a poster that would end up being round but this was likely snatched from production before the circular cut was made. (It's also possible it was a proof to check on colors and such.) The star of the show was Moby Grape but in hindsight, the star of the poster is the Hourglass, being Duane & Gregg Allman's early band and signed to Liberty Records. The group had just released their second offering, Power of Love, in March. The two shows took place on Friday & Saturday nights, May 17 & 18, 1968.

As for the headliner, San Francisco band Moby Grape had several disagreements with their management company back in the late 1960s; as a result, sometimes "fake" Moby Grapes were sent out on the road instead. To note the difference, this poster stated "The Real" before their name. And the third band on the poster was Mt. Rushmore.

The Art of Rock book thought so much of these round Kaleidoscope posters that it dedicated three pages to the series. This particular one, #10 in the Kaleidoscope series, is one of those they chose to picture.

The circular artwork measures 18 1/2" across and the entire square piece measures 22 ½" square, and grades to Very Good Plus condition. There's a small stain along the center of the bottom edge, and a surface blemishes near it. A couple of other benign little edge creases and markings present, and general toning throughout. COA from Heritage Auctions.
