Description
Dick Clark Caravan 1959 Concert Flyer w/Duane Eddy, Coasters, LaVern Baker, Drifters & Lloyd Price. An original vintage paper handbill for Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars package tour in the fall of 1959, advertising the talents of a dozen hit-makers plus an M.C. This stop on the tour was at the Kiel Auditorium's Opera House in St. Louis, MO for two shows on Friday, October 16, 1959.The hits are flying around everywhere on this five-color flyer (yellow, white, blue, red and black). Paul Anka's "Lonely Boy" was simply the biggest hit of his entire career, spending a month at #1 this summer. Lloyd Price's "Personality" was right behind it, spending three weeks at #2. And Annette (Funicello) had a Top 10 hit with "Tall Paul" at the start of the year, but "Lonely Guitar" didn't crack the Top 40.
The King of the Twang Guitar, Duane Eddy, had a Top 10 hit with "Forty Miles of Bad Road" this summer. Jimmy Clanton's "My Own True Love" was a Top 40 hit, but not one of his bigger ones. And LaVern Baker was coming off the biggest pop hit of her career, "I Cried a Tear," which had reached #6 earlier this year, but "So High, So Low" didn't fare nearly as well.
The Coasters' "Charlie Brown" is one of those classic 1950's hits that helped define an era, and spent three weeks at #2 earlier this year. This flyer could've just as easily given two other Top 10 hits they had this year, "Along Came Jones" and "Poison Ivy." Everyone knows the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," which reached #2 this summer. And the Skyliners hit with "Since I Don't Have You" to start the year off, and followed it with the modest performer "This I Swear."
Bobby Rydell was a teen idol just starting out, and "Kissin' Time" was his first charting single, reaching #11. We're not sure about the Jordan Bros. - getting neither a photo or song title - but Phil Phillips, hidden as he is down there, enjoyed a #2 hit this summer, "Sea of Love," his only charting single ever.
Measures 6 1/4" x 9" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. The upper right and lower left corners have light, vertical creases. Otherwise just very light handling and a slight bit of toning. COA from Heritage Auctions.
