Description

Chuck Berry, Bill Haley "Biggest In-Person Show of '56" Original 1950's Concert Handbill. An original, vintage paper advertising flyer from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on Monday, October 29, 1956 for a rock 'n' roll caravan tour that featured the talents of Bill Haley and the [sic] Comets, The Platters, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Chuck Berry, Clyde McPhatter, The Clovers, Ella Johnson, Shirley & Lee and several others.

The design on this handbill, for one of the very first rock 'n' roll package tours ever, uses several primary colors to great effect. The red, yellow, blue, white and black give off a dazzling five-color appearance. And not only is every star pictured, look at all those important song titles... "See You Later Alligator," "The Magic Touch," "My Prayer," "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," "Roll Over Beethoven"... it's like a 50's Seeburg rock 'n' roll jukebox. This thing is nothing but high points. And if you were on a budget, you could see it all for just... a buck and a half! That would be something like 12 cents per musician... wow.

The very first time Heritage has ever had the pleasure to offer this rare handbill. Things from 1956 just don't turn up; they were never saved, or done so accidentally. Thank goodness they did in Ottawa this time.

Measures 6" x 8 3/4" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Item has a few surface creases which are visible mostly on the verso. The creases appear a bit in the "Teenagers" name, Bill Haley's jacket under his guitar, in the small black area between Clyde McPhatter and The Clovers, and between "Ella" and "John." Also some light toning to the piece. But otherwise it's in lovely crisp condition, extremely well-preserved.
