Description

Cab Calloway 1943 Jumbo Window Card Concert Poster.
Another large cardboard poster from the State Theater in Hartford, CT about six weeks earlier than Duke. More catchy alternating red & black colors, also in excellent unused condition, and this time a photograph being used, that of Cab as a bandleader with baton.

Cab Calloway was one of the most popular big bands in America in the 1930's and 40's. "Hi - De - Ho" it proclaims above his name, and every music historian knows that became Cab's trademark catchphrase, drawn from his 1931 #1 smash hit, "Minnie the Moocher." Likewise for the 1934 short film and 1947 all-black musical of the same name, both starring Calloway. "Minnie the Moocher" was eventually added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.

And then it continues with "and his Jumpin' Jive Band," naming five of the entertainers which were all part of Cab's act... identified along the bottom as the "All New Cotton Club Revue." Any vintage piece associated with Harlem's legendary Cotton Club, of course, is magic. And the cred was there: Cab joined Duke Ellington in sharing the role of Cotton Club house band in 1931. So it sounds like a show not to be missed!

Another very rare original concert poster, the only one we've ever seen, from an era-defining musician who received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame. Measures 21.75" x 28.25", and grades to Very Good Plus with minor creases, toning throughout and some surface paper missing, perhaps from a tape lift, under the "y" in "Dinky" that luckily affects no lettering. Three small tears are present along the right edge, and a bit of general corner wear. Also has the most benign of light water stains in the very top margin. COA from Heritage Auctions.
