    Description

    Buddy Johnson, Coasters, Mickey & Sylvia 1956 Jumbo Chicago Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising jump blues pianist and bandleader Buddy Johnson and a host of others, in concert for a week's worth of shows commencing on Friday, April 20, 1956 at Chicago's famed Regal Theatre.

    This early poster is from the dawn of the rock 'n' roll and rhythm 'n' blues fusion-explosion that was coalescing in the mid-50's, although Buddy and his sister Ella were seasoned veterans by now. Not so with The Coasters, for whom this might be their earliest known poster; their Top 10 R&B hit "Down in Mexico," the first thing they ever charted, had just entered the Billboard charts.

    The same rookie status might be true for Mickey & Sylvia as well, whose breakthrough classic "Love Is Strange" would debut at the end of the year, go to #1 R&B and carry them nicely through the rest of the 50's.

    Measures 22" x 28 1/4" and grades to a strong Very Good Plus condition. Long horizontal creasing along both the top and bottom edges, but not approaching any lettering other than the printer's union bug. There are creases in "Show!" in the upper right and "Roman" at the bottom, which don't break color. Toning around the edges. COA from Heritage Auctions.
