Description
Bobby Darin 1959 Oregon Concert Poster w/"Dream Lover" & "Splish Splash." An original cardboard window card advertising Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Bobby Darin appearing in North Bend, OR for a "Show and Dance" on Friday night, July 10, 1959. The Col-Lee-Jets were the cleverly named opening band.As tour-blank concert posters go (it's been seen from other cities in the Pacific Northwest as well), this is one of the best from the late 50's, given Darin's stature, its great photo of him, three Top 10 hits listed and its use of five - yes, five - colors. Notice how the printer's "split-fountain" ink usage resulted in red wording at the top, black in the middle and green at the bottom. Throw in white and yellow, and you've got five colors.
You never heard anything about "Bullmoose," but on the poster, "Dream Lover" went to #2 earlier this year, "Splish Splash" hit #3 the previous year, and "Queen of the Hop" was a national top tenner in late '58. But what was coming up? Clear the decks: Bobby's next two singles were no less than "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea." What a time in Darin's career! Billboard magazine statistics point to 1959 being his best year ever.
This board, made by the Tilghman Press of Oakland, CA, measures 14" x 21 7/8" and grades to Fair condition. The board's front has multiple pin holes in the four corners plus the two side margins. There's a little bit of surface scuffing and grime, and toning throughout. The poster's verso is, frankly, a mess... it's covered with sticky residue from when it was posted somewhere (or attached to a backing board), plus a little masking tape at the top, a now-obscured tape lift in the center 2/3 of the way down, and writing inside that tape lift. But this condition should allow someone to pick up this fun 1950's poster at a bargain price compared to what it normally sells for; we've sold one of these from another Oregon city for as much as $1,600. COA from Heritage Auctions.
