    Description

Bob Dylan & The Hawks 1965 Concert Flyer on the Highway 61 Revisited Tour.
Mimeographed paper handbill, done on the cheap, for Bob Dylan's October 23, 1965 stop on a college campus in Burlington, Vermont. Although it looks like just another early, acoustic folk-music flyer, this is when Dylan would tear it up with the Hawks in the second half of the show, screaming the words to "Like a Rolling Stone" over a cacophony of amplified instruments.

So let's face it, this thing's as cheap as they get. However, it is 100% authentic and original, obtained directly from the former college teacher who posted them around town 54 years ago. It was probably run off in the campus print shop as a convenient way to get the word out. A conventional full-sized tour-blank cardboard poster was also used for this show, but that was done by Dylan's home office 300 miles away. These were homemade jobs done on the quick by kids, easily left on countertops, stapled to telephone poles and posted on campus bulletin boards. As for its appearance? "It is what it is," as we like to say in the hobby. Bottom line is, some people actually saw this rudimentary flyer, opened their wallets, bought tickets and saw a historic tour that you & I can only wish we had witnessed.

For more background on this special tour, be sure to see our listing in this auction for the 1966 Dylan poster from Seattle, WA. If you can't afford that poster, maybe this handbill is your answer for now.

"Bob Dylan Concert," it plainly proclaims in stenciled lettering. "Patrick Gym - UVM [University of Vermont]. Sat - Oct 23. Same Day [as] UVM-Norwich Football Game. 8:00 PM. Tickets $4.00 Res., $3.50 Res., $3.00 Balcony. Check or Money Order to: Dylan Concert, Box 527, Burlington, VT. - or - Bailey's Music RMS, 66 Church St., Burlington, VT." Not exactly a Griffin, Kelley or Mouse piece.

However, get a load of this: Bob Dylan's greatest album ever (so says I), Highway 61 Revisited, had just been released earlier in the month, and was firmly lodged at #4 this very week (October 23rd) in Billboard magazine's Top LPs chart. And his classic single "Positively 4th Street" had just entered the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 this very week. Are you sputtering and wheezing yet?

So you surely can't judge this book by its plain-wrap cover. A wickedly cool moment in music history for the 20th century's greatest single songwriter. When the music industry was still a very small, innocent, low-budget business. And yet, just think... Dylan may be playing a concert near your home town on the very night that you're reading this description.

Measures 8.4" x 9.7". In Very Good Plus condition with some toning and creasing on the upper left edge. COA from Heritage Auctions.
