Description

Bob Dylan 1964 Newport Folk Festival Concert Poster. A rare, seldom-seen original cardboard window card advertising the entire 1964 Newport Folk Festival in late July of that year. Lots of folk-music-leaning stars are present, such as Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger and Peter, Paul & Mary, but the big name here is Bob Dylan. Dylan's four-song acoustic set on the closing evening is considered by some Dylan scholars to be among his best recorded performances ever. Rather than just repeat crowd-pleasers like "Blowin' in the Wind," Dylan performed the new songs "All I Really Want to Do," "To Ramona," "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Chimes of Freedom," and then duetted with Baez on "With God on Our Side." He was fresh, vital, alive and sounded fantastic. So this poster carries a lot of weight in the Dylan world.

This poster is the perfect companion piece to the 1965 Newport Folk Festival red poster we sold a year ago for $21,250. Both have the same design layout, and together they tell the story of Dylan's historic transition from folk to rock right in front of the Newport audience and all the world. Measures 12" x 22" and grades to Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Board has several surface cuts on the front, including a vertical one that goes all the way through from the "O" in "Newport" to the "P" in "Park." On a superficial level (not going through the board), there's a vertical one from the "T" in "Festival" down to "Judy Collins" in Saturday's line-up, somehow not breaking any black color (probably because cuts are so much thinner than creases). And there's a light horizontal cut also from the "T" in "Festival" all the way across through the hands and over to the edge, but which doesn't penetrate the board. The poster also has copious surface creasing in the upper left corner including through the word "Newport" and on the right over the guitar and hands. There are unaddressed tears to the right of "Nixon &" on the edge (1/2") and in the lower left area (1 ¼") busting up the word "All" and resulting in slight surface paper loss (but not the board). There are two to five pin or staple holes in each corner, and one top center. General surface dirt is apparent in places. The verso has black markings that you see plus many surface cuts and slices that don't go through, perhaps two dozen in all.
