Description
Bob Dylan 1963 CORE Presents Syracuse, NY Concert Poster. An original, authentic, printed-before-the-show cardboard window card for Bob Dylan performing at the University Regent Theatre in Syracuse, New York on Sunday, November 3, 1963.This is clearly one of the best-looking Bob Dylan concert posters of the 1960's, which is why a serious bootlegger selected it many years ago to make endless pirated copies which were very close to the original. There are a couple of very discernable differences between the handful of real ones and the innumerable fakes, and this one passes the counterfeit test with flying colors. For one thing, the repro's have significant white markings in Dylan's ear and along his hairline; you can see it if someone tried to ink them away. Also, the pirated copies run a bit smaller than the standard size given below, and while you can always trim a poster down, you can never stretch it out to a bigger size. So thank goodness the pirates made theirs a tad too small, not a tad too large. It all adds up to an easy "tell" for those who know what to look for.
Measures 19 7/8" x 14" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Only a few Dylan posters in '63-'64 used this terrific font for the singer's name, and they're all standouts. This horizontal layout makes this Syracuse poster especially appealing, with a great shot of Dylan in his typical 1963 look of work shirt, acoustic guitar and harmonica in its holder. We even love the pointed, Indian-like graphic bug below the ticket info, and even "Columbia Records" is a bonus and never a given on a Bob concert poster.
This is certainly the year, 1963, that Dylan would be willing to do a show for the Congress of Racial Equality, or CORE. Just 11 days earlier, Dylan had recorded the final released take of the all-important "The Times They Are A-Changin'." Likewise with "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll," "When the Ship Comes In" and "One Too Many Mornings." His critical third album was to be released two months later, but to the public, this was still the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Added into the mix was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy this very month.
Condition details: Poster has a 2" surface crease starting right above Dylan's ear and going into the black. There's a ding to the poster's edge right at the top, straight up from Dylan's ear. The large B&W photo has the expected amount of very light surface scuffing. The upper and lower right corners (on the photo) are soft and rounded, displaying the smallest amount of the board underneath. There is a one-inch diagonal crease in the lower left corner, far away from any print. There is a tiny bit of foreign material stuck to the white right above "Store" in the ticket info. Some toning from age, most apparent on the verso around the four edges.
