Bob Dylan 1963 Columbia Records Cardboard Promo Poster. An original large cardboard promotional sign/poster for up-and-coming folk-music star Bob Dylan, produced by his label, Columbia Records, for display at retail outlets. Features a sizeable, captivating shot of the young Dylan at the microphone, with acoustic guitar and harmonica part of the action.

This piece dates from 1963, when Dylan released his Freewheelin' album and broke through with "Blowin' in the Wind," thanks largely to Peter, Paul & Mary taking it into the national Top 10. He was folk music's new darling, appearing with Joan Baez in concert often, and rapidly becoming the "spokesman for a generation," a descriptor he disliked but which was hard to argue with.

Measures 19 1/2" x 28 1/2" and grades to Poor condition. Seven tack or pinholes at the top, one bottom center. Strong crease in upper left corner area created upwards of 15 lines for an unusual visual 'curvy' effect, but it's only in the white area and the board's not bent. Three of the four corners have the white dinged away, and there's various light marks, scrapes and dings present, the biggest being a large black smudge under Dylan's guitar. There's even a few drops of what might have been glue which are 3-D to the touch in the upper right quadrant of the photo, but all in the black and not on Bob's face. The verso's either a total loss, or charming to some who have seen it. The easel was stripped away leaving tape lifts all the way, and then used as a colorful bookkeeping ledger.

This item clung on to its Good rating, instead of fair or poor, because most people only care about the front, and Dylan's photo and the big Columbia wording escaped relatively unscathed. From the Fred Weinberg Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
