Description
Bob Dylan 1961 Carnegie Chapter Hall Concert Flyer / Program for First N.Y. Concert. A truly historic Bob Dylan concert piece from Carnegie Chapter Hall in New York City on November 4, 1961. This four-page handbill / pamphlet / program was used to promote Dylan's "first New York concert" for the still completely unknown ragamuffin folk singer. Dylan's manager at the time, Terri Thal, recently published her memoir entitled My Greenwich Village: Dave, Bob and Me, referring to Dylan and her husband Dave Van Ronk. Regarding this particular show, Thal writes, "It was a flop; only a few people came, and most of them were musicians who didn't pay the admission fee." Measures 5 1/2 x 8 1/2" and grades to Near Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: Izzy Young of Greenwich Village's Folklore Center took a flyer on Dylan and promoted this little show, which was anything but a sell-out; the 200-seat Carnegie Chapter Hall was only a quarter-filled at showtime. Those who did go had something to brag about for the rest of their lives.
Dylan would record his debut album for Columbia Records just a couple of weeks after this, and he performed at least three songs that would wind up on the LP: "Fixin' to Die," "Pretty Peggy-O" and "Gospel Plow." He also performed his hero Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." The complete track list, however, has never been ascertained.
Promoter Young was so proud of his protégé that he over-printed this handout before the show and sold the extras at his Folklore Center for years afterwards. Mr. Young once swore to this journalist that he never reprinted the program, that they were all originals done before the show. A ballpark guess is that he had printed perhaps 500 of them, but if that's true only 10% got used at the show, and who knows how many are left today.
It's fascinating that the best concert handbill of Dylan's entire career is also the one for his very first concert, which only 53 people attended. How can you possibly do better than this four-page advertising handout (which was on the counter of the Folklore Center for weeks leading up to the show) which has a terrific photo of Bob on the cover, great type fonts and design all across the cover, and terrific folk- and Dylan-news all throughout, include Dylan's myth-making in full gear. Just look at the first paragraph inside... raised in Gallup, NM? Playing carnivals at the age of 14? Really, Bob?
