Billie Holiday 1957 Greenwich Village, NYC Large Handbill. An original large paper concert flyer, just one step down from a poster, for the legendary Billie Holiday appearing in New York City's Greenwich Village at midnight on Saturday night, June 15, 1957. Billed as "a mammoth jazz festival on the stage of the Loew's Sheridan," the bill also featured the Modern Jazz Quartet and the Charlie Mingus Quintet, among others. An exciting, dynamic handbill featuring a great shot of Lady Day in action at the microphone and loads of details about the show. We've only been able to offer this once before, in November 2018, and it sold for $5,250. And this one's in better condition. Measures 8 1/2" x 10" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Billie's recorded output this year consisted of the album Body and Soul, released on Verve Records and produced by Norman Granz. Besides the famous title track, the LP contained three George and Ira Gershwin standards: "They Can't Take That Away from Me," "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" and "Embraceable You." It closes with "Moonlight in Vermont." Lady Day probably sang some of these on this occasion, in addition to her classics like "God Bless the Child."

It's most interesting that this "mammoth" late-night gig didn't even commence until midnight. But the Loew's Theatre was in financial distress and had recently launched a fundraising series called "Music for Night People," of which this was a part. Notice that Jean Shepherd is listed as the "Narrator" and co-presenter; he was a well-known New York radio personality of the day.

Besides the MJQ and Charlie Mingus, the billed was rounded out by the Randy Weston Trio and Barbara Lea. Tickets were only $2.00 in advance and $2.50 at the door.

Condition details: Has a tiny tip of the upper right corner missing. The two lower corners are creased, and a speck of the lower left corner's tip is missing also. Small white nicks to the edge in 4-5 places around the flyer. Very light four-inch horizontal crease from the handbill's edge over to Billie's microphone, but fortuitously stops just before it touches the mic; it's really extremely hidden and benign. General overall toning to the paper on both sides.
