Billie Holiday 1946 New York City Concert Handbill.
A two-sided paper flyer which announced Lady Day's highly anticipated show at Manhattan's Town Hall on Saturday, February 16, 1946. This leaflet displays a stunning photo of Miss Holiday with trademark flowers in her hair. Then the back side is charmingly printed in dull red and says all kinds of fun stuff, including: "Billie Holiday, America's Jazz Artist, in her Concert Debut.

"Singing the songs for which she is famous, including 'The Man I Love,' 'Them There Eyes,' 'I Cover the Waterfront,' 'Miss Brown to You,' 'Fine and Mellow' and 'Strange Fruit.'" Billie had mostly played nightclubs up to this point, so this was considered a coming-out for her, her concert debut. Billie Holiday: A Biography states, "Although nervous, Holiday gave a top-notch performance and was rewarded with enthusiastic applause by the sold-out house. It was a personal triumph, one that was long overdue in light of her contributions to the music world."

This piece is so rare that it's the very first time Heritage Auctions has had the pleasure of offering one for auction, and it's only our third Billie Holiday flyer ever.

The handbill measures 7" x 10", and has been professionally restored to Very Good Minus condition with creaming and fold marks on the bottom portion, repaired paper tears including her facial area, and two bits of small paper loss along the lower right edge. COA from Heritage Auctions.
